If your car has just stopped or won't start, take a breath. Most breakdowns are more inconvenient than dangerous. The order of priority is simple: get yourself safe first, work out roughly what's wrong second, then decide between a mobile mechanic and a tow. Here's how to do each calmly.

Step 1: Get safe

  • If you're moving, ease off, indicate, and coast to the left as far off the road as you can: a breakdown lane, side street or car park.
  • Turn on your hazard lights immediately so other drivers see you.
  • On a freeway like the Hume out past Craigieburn or the Monash, get well clear of traffic. If it's safe, exit the car on the side away from traffic and stand behind the barrier. Never stand in a live lane.
  • In traffic with no shoulder, stay belted in with hazards on and call for help rather than risk getting out.
  • If there's smoke or a fuel smell, get everyone out and well away, then call 000.

Step 2: Work out what kind of problem it is

You don't need to be a mechanic to narrow it down. A few quick observations tell a mobile mechanic a lot before they even arrive.

Likely a battery if…

  • The engine cranks slowly or just clicks when you turn the key.
  • Dash lights are dim, or nothing lights up at all.
  • It struggled to start lately, especially on cold mornings out in Cranbourne.

Possibly something bigger if…

  • The engine cranks fine but won't fire (could be fuel, ignition or sensors).
  • It overheated, lost power suddenly, or made a loud mechanical noise.
  • A red warning light (oil pressure, temperature) came on before it stopped. If so, don't keep trying to drive.
  • There's a puddle under the car or steam from the bonnet.

Call us and describe what happened. Many faults (flat batteries especially) we can fix where you are, across Melbourne.

Step 3: Mobile mechanic or tow?

This is where you can save real time and money. Plenty of breakdowns don't need a tow truck at all.

A mobile mechanic can usually help when…

  • It's a flat or failing battery. We can test and replace it on the spot.
  • It's a fault that can be diagnosed and repaired roadside or in your driveway.
  • The car is at home, at work, or safely parked, like a shopping centre in Ringwood or a quiet street in Blackburn.

A tow is the right call when…

  • The car isn't safe to leave where it is, or is in a live traffic lane.
  • There's a serious fault, such as overheating, no oil pressure or a major mechanical noise, where driving or running the engine could cause more damage.
  • The repair genuinely needs workshop equipment.

If you're not sure, call and describe it. We'll give you an honest answer, including telling you when a tow is the smarter option.

While you wait

  • Stay with the car only if it's safe; otherwise wait somewhere secure nearby.
  • Note your location: a cross street, exit number or landmark helps us reach you fast.
  • Keep your phone charged for the callback.
